Just Eleanor Rockets EP

Just Eleanor Rockets EP

We caught up with guitarist Danny Shultz of Just Eleanor and got an inside look at the band’s new EP, ‘Rockets’ and a little insight into the guitarist’s idea of tone and all things guitar.

Days: How long have you played guitar with your current set up?

Danny: Too long, like, years.

Days: How has your setup changed or evolved?

Danny: I’ve tried and tried in vain to find great tone in a distortion pedal so I’ve gone through a few of those. but I’ve only ever found that sonically, it’s the same as having a view of the ocean or a picture of the ocean in your hand. The pedal being like a picture in your hand because although it looks the same exactly, you don’t have the depth of the real thing. You need an amp that is the real thing. Of course with this revelation comes lots of grief in knowing that what I want costs a lot of money that I don’t possess.

Days: As a guitarist, what’s important to you in shaping your guitar tone and why?

Danny: The biggest thing in principle that has changed is my approach. my goal used to be to attain a big and full tone that could dominate. Now I’m realizing more and more that the most important thing is to have clarity and to be able to let my guitar be what it is instead of trying to make it something it is not. Example: If i own a Tele and Twin Reverb I will never sound like a Les Paul in a Marshall stack. I mean I guess I could try (and I have) but it will never sound like it needs to on stage. Conclusion: take what you’ve got and let it shine. If you don’t like what you’ve got, save up and get something else.

Days: Does your Fender Telecaster have any special modifications?

Danny: Nope. Standard American Delux Tele with the switch in the volume control that selects the wiring config. when both pickups are on.

Days: When you record, does your set up change compared to your live setup?

Danny: Yes. I use other peoples’ amps that sound better than mine to record. Fender Deville and Vox Night Train.

Days: As a guitarist, what is more important to you, the technical side of playing, or generating a vibe of some kind?

Danny: What’s best for the song is always top priority, playing it well is just as important. So, to answer the question…yes…

Days: You often are seen on stage just chillin’ up there. What’s going through your head during a show?

Danny: Don’t mess up…have fun…don’t mess up…. whats the next song?…..oh crap i forgot my name……..don’t mess up, is this the part where I’m supposed to do something important?…..hope not cause if it is, i just jacked it up bad….. yup, I suck……gosh this is fun.

Days: Thanks for spending your time with The Days Of The Week, is there anything else we should know about your killer guitar tone?

Danny: Hope you enjoy it is all. That’s a big part of why I strive for it. The other part is because I think I enjoy it the most out of all yall.

Taylor Swift Speak Now Tour 2011

Taylor Swift has announced her 2011 tour dates. Her recently released album ‘Speak Now’ has gone platinum in its first week. (Over 1,000,000 records sold).

An excerpt from her website reads, “For the last two years, I’ve been writing and recording an album called Speak Now. I only have the option of writing about things that happen in my life, so thankfully a LOT has happened in my life in the last two years. I know I don’t always say the right thing at the right time or speak up when I should, but I write it all down. I get my guitar and a pen and all of a sudden, I have a chance to say exactly what I meant to say in real life. Some of the things I wrote about are things everyone saw me go through. Some of the things I wrote about are things nobody ever knew about. I’m beyond excited for you to hear these stories and confessions. ”

The highly popular Swift has dates in Singapore, Seoul, (although we’ll see how this whole North Korea picking a fight thing turns out…), Tokyo and more. The tour dates and locations are posted below.

Tonight the Dancing With The Stars 2 night finale has kicked of with some very amazing results.

Jennifer blew the roof off with her “redemption” dance, receiving a do-over on a sloppy paso doble she and dance partner Derek Hough did a few weeks back. Prior to holding up his 10 paddle, judge Bruno Tonioli shouted he wished he could give her an 11. Then, during her freestyle, she gave a shout-out to her most famous role in “Dirty Dancing” by shaking her stuff to “Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance).”

Lead judge Len Goodman placed a point on the entire season by telling Jennifer, “You’re like a juggernaut … heading for that mirror-ball trophy.”

Stud muffin Kyle left it all on the dance floor for his freestyle, gaining a 29 out of 30 for his dance to “Tootsie Roll.” In Costume like Will Smith in the opening part of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Kyle and partner Lacey Schwimmer took off with flips, break dancing and also some ballroom tricks. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba was so impressed with the performance that she called Kyle “the Fresh Prince of ‘Dancing With the Stars.’”

Do you think that the Judges are being unfair?

Jackie Evancho Christmas Album

Jackie Evancho Christmas Album

Jackie Evancho, a recent star on the hit show America’s Got Talent (AGT) released a Christmas album entitled O Holy Night on November 16th. The album features the songs:

1. Silent Night
2. Panis Angelicus
3. O Holy Night
4. Pie Jesu

An excerpt from Evancho’s website bio reads, “It seems unfathomable now, but Jackie’s appearance on “AGT” came after other brushes with the show were met with rejection. She auditioned twice for “AGT” in person in Philadelphia and the producers passed on her. It wasn’t until her parents submitted a YouTube audition for “AGT,” almost on a whim, that she finally found her home on center stage.”

The young singer, (she’s only 10 years old) reportedly has perfect pitch, and has competed in vocal competitions prior to her appearance on America’s Got Talent.

Opinion: It’s nice to hear a voice that hasn’t been steamrolled by Auto Tune!

ipad John Lennon

John Lennon with iPad

Recently in iPad news, we read that Damon Albarn of Gorillaz is making the band’s next album completely on the iPad, and it got me wondering what John Lennon would’ve done with an iPad.

The ability to create and record music on the same device that enables you to upload the product straight to your website or to the iTunes store would have thrilled John Lennon, it seems. If you’ll permit me, ‘Imagine’ the kind of impact the iPad would have helped John Lennon make on culture.

Arguably, the hyperbolic production of pop music leaves one longing for a low-tech, honest, expressive alternative. Of course there are hundreds of artists that don’t subscribe themselves to the ear candy of pop label products, and there always will be. And the flip side to the ever-increasing feasibility of recording one’s own music and uploading it to the world means more, shall we say, less desirable art.

Of course, it’s just as feasible to record ear-blazing, candy-coated pop tunes as well on an iPad. Or just think what Kurt Cobain would have done with an iPad. Some brilliant new form of irony, perhaps?

I look forward to hearing how the medium of the iPad will change the objectives in recording music and distributing it online. Hopefully we’ll start to see a trend of some kind emerge that departs from the run-of-the-mill production of current music.

How To Play Guitar

The Musician's Toolbox

The Musician’s Toolbox released it’s Learn Guitar Chords DVD, a how to play guitar method that teaches from the first person perspective. It is a unique idea that, according to a statement from the Musician’s Toolbox, has gathered attention and sold in over 20 countries.

In the history of guitar instruction, no other method teaches from the user’s viewpoint. “That’s probably because the method of instruction that has been passed down from generation to generation is the same, you simply view your teacher’s guitar as if he was sitting across from you,” said Andrew Wonacott, founder of the company.

“If you see on the screen what you see when you look down at your own hands, it’s far more intuitive to learn, especially for beginners,” said Wonacott.

As technology advances, so to will the standards of quality for educational products, (or, at least, they should…) and The Musician’s Toolbox is a pretty cool  example of implementing technology to teach an old subject in a fresh way. Learn Guitar Chords DVD

Learn Guitar Chords DVD

Joel Miller – Winchester, CA – The Musician’s Toolbox is a small business with big ideas. Being a father and a guitar enthusiast, I’m always on the prowl for quality guitar products that I can use to help teach my kids the joys of playing the guitar. Well, if you’re reading this article, you’re in luck. I’m not entirely sure this qualifies as news, however, I think it merits a good look on the basis that I believe it’s a truly unique idea. I love good ideas, and think they should be shared.

The Musician’s Toolbox has a product called The Learn Guitar Chords DVD that teaches the user how to play the guitar from the user’s perspective. To my knowledge, it’s the only guitar DVD that teaches from the first person perspective. I caught up with the guys at The Musician’s Toolbox and got the story behind the idea.

“I’ve taught piano and guitar lessons for 8 years now, and the idea came from all those months of teaching guitar, using the same books, same pictures. They all show the guitar from the teacher’s perspective, which I always thought was confusing. So, long story short, we did something about that,” said Andrew Wonacott who developed the idea.

“Andrew and I used to own a production company together, and I’m a bit of a guitar enthusiast myself, so when he showed me his idea, I gladly joined the team to develop the animations and graphics that they needed,” said Chris Culp, a professional video editor.

The Learn Guitar Chords DVD is geared toward the beginning guitarist, contains tutorials, play along songs, and since everything is viewed from the user’s perspective, it’s extremely easy to follow. My son was able to follow along, and he’s 8. I let my wife try it, who has no musical experience whatsoever, and she was able to pick it up, too.

Good ideas should be shared, so, merry Christmas, dear reader, I recommend the Learn Guitar Chords DVD. It’s available on their website www.1stpersonguitar.com or on Amazon.com as well.
